Pubs, Restaurants & Bars

Pubs

We’re lucky to have two great pubs just a short walk away. If you’re heading out on foot, don’t forget to borrow one of our torches and stay on the footpath!

First up is the Brown Cow in Chatburn. Simply step out of the front door and follow the footpath down to Chatburn. The Brown Cow offers hearty, no-nonsense food, and they’ve got a great selection of local real ales, fine wines, and over 40 gins at their gin bar. Whether you’re soaking up the sun in their beer garden or cosying up by the fire, the warm welcome is always guaranteed.

Turning left towards the picturesque village of Downham, you can follow the same footpath in the opposite direction to reach the Assheton Arms. This quaint pub with a snazzy restaurant offers a delightful bistro-style menu. Managed by James’ Places, it naturally boasts the full range of Bowland Brewery beers. Whether you’re after a pint of local ale or a well-crafted dish, the Assheton Arms serves up a perfect blend of charm and quality.

A little further afield by car (but well worth the scenic drive), you’ll find the historic Inn at Whitewell. This 16th-century former coaching inn sits majestically above the River Hodder, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and distant fells. Their fish pie is a must-try, and for wine lovers, there’s a delightful little wine shop next to the reception area—perfect for picking up a bottle or two to take home.

If it’s home-cooked fare you’re after, we highly recommend The Swan With Two Necks in Pendleton, just a 10-minute drive from Greendale. As a CAMRA award-winning pub, you’ll be spoiled for choice with their excellent range of real ales. The food is simple but delicious, often complemented by a specials board. In winter, you can cosy up by the roaring fire, while in summer, the front of the pub is perfect for soaking up the sunshine with a pint in hand.

Restaurants

If fine dining is your passion, then Northcote is an absolute must. With a Michelin star proudly held for over 25 years, every meal here is a true celebration of flavour and craftsmanship. Executive Chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen and her talented brigade are dedicated to showcasing the finest produce, honouring each ingredient with precision. Complementing the outstanding dishes is an award-winning wine list, all delivered with real Northern hospitality.

The White Swan in Fence is a vibrant pub that excels in serving fantastic food, a superb selection of wines, and award-winning Timothy Taylor’s real ales—the only pub in Lancashire to have earned a Michelin Star. Their small, seasonal set menu showcases fresh, carefully sourced ingredients.

Michael’s former boss, Nigel Haworth, has long been a passionate advocate for Lancashire produce and now showcases his commitment at The Three Fishes in Mitton, where he cultivates his own vegetable garden. The à la carte menu features unpretentious delights like tempura scallops and flavourful corn-fed chicken. For those seeking a more immersive experience, there’s a seasonal set menu available in either 5 or 8 courses, beautifully bookended by cheese rolls and mini Eccles cakes—beloved staples that have rightfully earned their place on the menu.

Fairly new on the scene, The Rum Fox in Grindleton is a beautifully renovated former pub that’s quickly gaining a reputation for its exceptional food and warm hospitality. Just a short drive from Greendale Teahouse, it’s well worth a visit for those looking to explore the local dining scene.

Yu - Copster Green is the destination for exquisite and authentic Chinese fine dining. Chef Victor Yu’s career started as a KP for his father Charlie Yu in 1989, before moving to front of house then starting in the kitchen as a chef at the age of 22. Combined with the skills learnt from his father, collaborations with other well- known chefs, and travels across Asia, Victor honed and refined his style, becoming head chef at 28. You simply must try the Honey Roast Char Sui Pork or Charlie Yu’s Chicken Curry.

La Locanda is a charming Italian restaurant located in Gisburn, just a short drive from Greendale Teahouse. Known for its incredible homemade bread and pasta hand-crafted by Agri-Chef Maurizio, La Locanda offers a delightful menu that showcases authentic Italian cuisine made with the finest local ingredients (no pizza or lasagna here!). Maurizio’s wife, Cinzia, who looks after the dining room, is incredibly knowledgeable about Italian wines and extra virgin olive oil, ensuring you have the perfect pairing with your meal. The warm, inviting atmosphere makes it a fantastic spot for a relaxed dining experience, whether you’re stopping by for lunch or enjoying a special dinner.

In Clitheroe, we wholeheartedly recommend Brizola, a fantastic Greek-inspired restaurant run by Racheal, a proud Lancashire lass. Her culinary skills shine as she crafts Greek dishes that are truly exceptional—many say she cooks Greek food better than the Greeks themselves! Another delightful option is Tom’s Table, a charming bistro situated in the heart of Clitheroe, offering a variety of delicious meals in a warm and inviting setting. Both spots are perfect for a lovely meal after exploring the local area.

Bars

The Whalley Wine Bar is a rare gem in the UK, offering an authentic wine bar experience. Operated by the same team behind ‘The Whalley Wine Shop’ next door, it boasts an impressive and extensive wine list that is sure to delight. In addition to their superb selection of wines, they serve a range of small plates perfect for sharing. To ensure a spot—whether for a leisurely drink or a meal—it’s advisable to book a table in advance.

More wine enthusiasts will find their haven at Will’s in Clitheroe, which offers a larger dining experience alongside a good wine selection. Following its success in Barrowford, Will’s opened a second branch in the former NatWest bank in summer 2024, bringing its celebrated offerings closer to us. They offer a large range of wines, beers, spirits, an ever changing tapas style menu & stone baked pizzas.

For a vibrant atmosphere, Keystreet Bar in Clitheroe is the place to be. While drinks may be a touch pricier, the lively ambiance is well worth it, featuring an eclectic mix of music, often accompanied by live performances. It’s a perfect spot to unwind with a drink and enjoy the tunes late into the night.

The Beer Shack in Clitheroe is a must-visit for beer enthusiasts. They offer an impressive selection of exciting and innovative beer styles, from refreshing IPAs to rich stouts and tangy sours. With a rotating variety of guest beers from craft breweries across the UK and beyond, there’s always something new to try. Whether you’re a seasoned beer connoisseur or just looking to explore, The Beer Shack is the perfect spot to enjoy some of the finest local brews.

The Parlour Cocktail Bar, nestled in Wellgate, Clitheroe, is the perfect spot for cocktail aficionados and casual drinkers alike. Renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and expertly crafted cocktails, this stylish bar offers a diverse menu featuring both classic and innovative concoctions. With good reviews from patrons, it’s a great place to unwind and enjoy a night out with friends.
