At Greendale Teahouse & Rooms, we’re deeply committed to minimising our environmental footprint and doing our part to protect the beautiful surroundings of Pendle and the Forest of Bowland.

Sustainability is at the heart of what we do, and we continually strive to find new ways to operate in an eco-friendly manner. Here’s how we’re making a difference—and how you can, too, during your stay with us.

What We’re Doing:

  1. Sourcing Local & Seasonal Produce:
We prioritise locally sourced, seasonal ingredients in our kitchen to reduce food miles and support nearby farmers, growers and traders. This not only ensures freshness but also helps the local economy. The packaging used by our suppliers is mainly sustainable and is always returned to them for re-use. Bowland Bio Energy is our go-to supplier for logs for our wood burner, using wood sourced sustainably on the Downham Estate.

  2. Energy Efficiency:
Our rooms are equipped with energy-efficient lighting and heating systems to conserve energy. We’ve also implemented a towel and linen reuse programme to minimise water and electricity usage.

  3. Water Management:
Our hot water is heated by a state-of-the-art energy efficient boiler. Waste water is treated naturally at our on-site reed filtration system before it is collected by the national waste water grid.

  4. Waste Reduction:
We avoid single-use plastics wherever possible, offering biodegradable or recyclable alternatives in our tearoom and guest rooms. Our waste is carefully sorted to maximise recycling efforts, and food waste is composted when possible.

  5. Eco-Friendly Toiletries:
The toiletries we provide are cruelty-free and come in refillable containers, reducing the use of plastic packaging. Please do not remove these from the room.

  6. Sustainable Transportation:
We encourage guests and visitors alike to explore the area by foot, bicycle, or public transport, reducing the carbon footprint of your visit. We offer bicycle storage on-site and provide information on local public transport options.

How You Can Help:

  1. Reduce Energy Use:
During your stay, you can help us by turning off lights and appliances when not in use, and by keeping windows closed when the heating is on to conserve energy. If you’re happy to reuse your towels, please hang them up on the towel rail, if you’d like us to replace them, leave them in the bath or shower.

  2. Minimise Waste:
Please use the bin in your room for non-recyclable waste, leave any glass, metal or paper neatly stacked next to the bin and we’ll remove it when we tidy your room. You can also choose to avoid single-use plastics wherever possible or taking these home with you to recycle. If you’re heading out for a picnic or hike, we encourage you to bring reusable containers and bottles.

  3. Water Use:
Please do not leave taps on unnecessarily or put anything other than the toilet tissue we’ve provided in the toilet. Thank you for using low impact toiletries or using a minimum amount.

  4. Respect Nature:
While exploring the stunning landscapes around us, be mindful of local wildlife and stick to marked paths to help preserve the natural environment.

With your help during your stay, we can ensure that the beauty of this special place is preserved for future generations to enjoy. Thank you for helping us stay green!

However small, your help makes all the difference, thank you
